Luxury Accessories: Are They Worth It?

Sometimes you see a piece and you're drawn to it. Other times you pick something up because it whispered to you quietly from its place on the rack. This belt was definitely the former. After seeing it in several editorials and popping up all over my Pinterest, I thought rather than buying another boring leather belt – I'd take the leap. Sure this gaudy buckle could turn out to be morbidly tacky or it could amp up any outfit with a touch of luxury. No, it wasn't cheap but there's a calculation I often do when splurging on my designer items. Want to find out if you're purchase will be worth it? Keep reading! The Hautemommie - Style. Beauty. Life. Done Chicly.I like expensive things, I work hard and I'm grateful I can afford my champagne tastes these days. However, that doesn't mean I go out buying $400 belts every chance I get. What it does mean is that before I make any large purchase I ask myself three questions to see if handing over my money is really worth it.  The Hautemommie - Style. Beauty. Life. Done Chicly.

How often will I use/wear said item?

Once you decide to purchase a designer or luxury piece be that a purse, belt, or clothing item you want to figure out what its place will be in your closet. Buying a Gucci Marmont suede bag in magenta will be cute, yes. But if you're not a person who often wears color or can't figure out how to incorporate the bag with clothing you already have? You should pass. A splurge purchase should be one you can see yourself wearing multiple times without growing tired of seeing it. With a purchase like this belt, I knew it was one I would be comfortable making because I typically wear gold accessories, I tend to wear neutral colors meaning it would pair well with my closet, and belts are a great multi-functional accessory.

What's the cost per wear?

Determining the cost per wear can help you figure out if your purchase is valuable. For example this belt costs $420 not including tax. If I wear it just ten times I've essentially only paid $42 per wear. Which is a perfectly good price for me. Especially because I likely would have spent at least that on a belt anyway. Now I'm getting better quality, longer wear, and exactly what I want. I use this method each time I splurge because I want to ask myself beforehand if I truly want an item or if I'm simply lusting after it because its beautiful. Also the older I get, the more I'm challenging myself to depend less on fast fashion and work on investing more in my closet. Yes, I know I would need to curb my Zara habit – keep your voice down.

Will you miss the money once it's gone?

This is a biggie, because although you may have the funds to afford said purchase – you don't want to suffer through buyer's remorse. It's the worst feeling. You may be looking at your account thinking I absolutely can spend the dough on that new Sophie Hulme tote but if you have to rework your entire budget to do it? Like forgoing grocery for three weeks? Baby, let it go. There are great looking alternatives that can suffice until you can truly buy without worry. I totally understand because I've been there. But I never wanted to be the person who couldn't handle my business while I looked cute. Priorities, sister!

  2. Firstly, I love the photos!!

You’re absolutely right about splurging in items we won’t be using so often in the future. It’s really also about shopping within our means instead of worrying about keeping up with the Jones. (If that’s the right terms.) you’re are preaching!
