I understand the desire
to seemingly make up for
lost time.
I get wanting to do “right,”
now.
But we didn’t JUST get here.
These businesses have BEEN
standing,
existing,
working
before this week.
⠀
once the dust settles,
that’s when we’ll see if
you’re “getting” it.
don’t start treating us like
things you’ve recently discovered.
nor should you arise
from your slumber
expecting to be coddled.
when a child is disciplined,
the real work comes after
the admonishment.
⠀
are you willing to work?
or are you here for praise?
because I don’t have time
for empty platitudes
and the denial of willful ignorance.
be sure to keep us in mind
when the dust has settled.
and keep doing the work
when the cameras have turned off.
show us who you really are.

💫 I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again

💫 I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again,
Joy is an act of resistance.
we are all weary,
drained,
depleted
of this fight.
many of us, long before we could
utter our own cries of wrongdoing,
ages ahead of when we could put
a name to our pain,
we felt it.
⠀
we overheard the mumbling of our grandparents,
listened as our parents lamented on about the atrocities
they experienced in pursuit
of simply trying to keep
food on our tables.
we lended our small ears to their
wounded hearts,
and all we could give we’re tiny embraces.
⠀
years later,
we understand.
all too familiar are we with the same
maddening feelings they harbored.
decades have flown by and the frustrations are still many.
⠀
but what I reflect on
is how we made it over.
how even in the midst of
all of the suffering,
we laughed.
jokes floated by
carrying the sounds of our
bellies deepest roars.
I think of how we found joy
in even the darkest
of times.
⠀
here we stand again.
in the center of calamity,
at the forefront of reckoning
wondering how we will get through.
joy.
joy is how.
joy in the tiniest things,
joy in the wins we are experiencing
in spite of turmoil.
joy in prosperity that is surfacing
even in the face of a pandemic.
⠀
they have stolen our voices,
our bodies,
our people
but I refuse to let them have my joy.
⠀
it is my strength.
⠀
it is my refuse.
⠀
it is my resistance.
⠀

know about me,
it’s that if I’m talking about it?
I am about it.

advocate, and entrepreneur who has
spent almost a decade working as an advocate on behalf of women & girls through roles in the California State Legislature, Planned Parenthood, and non-profits. Her thoughts on politics and culture have been featured in Marie Claire, Vox, The Independent, and more.

We’re going to get frank and honest
about racism in America and how
that looks from where we stand.
as a Black woman and a Latina woman,
how that intersects and what non-Black
people of color and white people
can do to address their roles in perpetuating racism in 2020.

if we’re going to get better in this
country,
then we have to address the issues
head on.
It’s time out for not having discussions
out of fear because they’re
uncomfortable,
Black people are tired of watching
our people die.
discomfort is where truth lives.
and on the other side of that -
is freedom.

our hope is that you learn what
you can do,
get some insight on what you don’t
know,
and use it to change the world from
where you’re standing.

💫 I’ve seen it said that being Black is exhau

💫 I’ve seen it said that being Black
is exhausting.
I must disagree.
my Blackness doesn’t tire me out.
its richness does not make me weary.
the regality in my bones is not the
thing that makes them ache.
nor is it the strength of ancestor’s past coursing through my veins
that brings me to my knees.
⠀
“what is it,” you ask?
it is the history of this country,
that isn’t history at all
that is exhausting.
the flagrant fouls consistently happening
with no regard
bringing me sleepless nights
and weeping mornings.
the inconsistent way rules are applied.
constant violence,
even the kind that doesn’t always result in death.
you see because death,
we’re familiar with.
we know it well.
it’s the violence that persists in casual
conversations and interactions
combining that with the death?
oh that’s an unrelenting ailment
all on its own.
that is what makes us weary.
⠀
Black people, I hear you.
I see you.
I feel you.
let us not put the burden on
our Blackness as the problem.
no because your Blackness
is beautiful.
it is powerful.
it stands the tests of time.
your Blackness is not draining you,
it is not breaking you down.
how the world treats us,
is.
⠀
in the midst of our pain,
i am aiming to remember that this
Blackness, is a gift.
misunderstood, yes.
but invaluable all the same.
today may be hard,
but we?
we are not our brokenness.
we are not unworthy,
we deserve life.
Full.
Abundant.
And beautiful.

take care of you today.
you deserve it.

💫 I woke up today with the words declare, decre

💫 I woke up today with the words
declare, decree, and determine
on my heart.
on a day that is set apart to
remember lives that have been
lost,
I'm thinking on what we make
of the lives we're given.
so often we allow the
circumstances of our lives
DETERMINE what we make
of them.
⠀
we give space to the woes
and the worries that we're
planted inside of us from
the time we arrived here.
much of who we are isn't
even a choice of our own.
it's why we find them hard to
let go of,
or why we figure there are
no other options.
if the roots are tethered to
our hearts and spirits
how could different ever
be an option?
⠀
but that is why we
must DECREE.
it is why we have to be
intentional about these lives.
the reason we have to be
aware of weeds that spring up
from those roots.
and why some of the deeply
seeded things require
digging up,
a removal,
to usurp the ways of old.
purposeful focus on getting
things out of the way
that are keeping you from
the life you envision.
⠀
i have done that.
DETERMINED to get where
i want to go.
it meant staring demons in
the face and telling them,
"no more."
the tears I've shed in fear
that i wouldn't recognize
myself anymore
have mixed with those
i've cried in pain.
but I know it was necessary.
we talk so much about
manifesting what we want.
what no one talks about
is the the before.
⠀
before the manifestation
you've got to declare it so.
you've got to make a decree
of what it will be,
and you've got to determine
to get there.
i want you to see yourself
in me.
i want you to know that
those dreams that sparkle
in your mind
are just like mine.
they are glimpses of what
you are called for.
inklings of what is meant
for you.
⠀
in honoring lost lives today,
remember to take great care
of the one you've got,
make it everything you desire.
live life in 3D.
declare.
decree.
determine.
⠀
and then the manifestation will come.
⠀
