The Hautemommie JETSETS: Punta Cana, Dominican Republic

If you’ve been tuned into the news over the past few months, you’ve encountered scathing reports on the untimely deaths of tourists in the Dominican Republic. I want to say that prior to my visit to the island, I had been wanting to get there for a long time. I was sad that this news preceded my visit. I’ll say this, and it’s how I feel about much of the Caribbean, it is easy to throw judgment on places when they are inhabited by a majority Black or Brown population. But like its counterparts, the Dominican was a beautiful, gorgeous island filled with an even more stunning group of people.

I hopped on a plane in LAX ten hours later landing in the DR with turquoise blue waters greeting me. Instantly the humidity and the Spanish swept me up along with the ocean breeze and our adventure began. This won’t be a full travel guide because I spent all of my visit at the all-inclusive Breathless resort, since I was there for a wedding. However I can offer you some tips on how to pack, navigate all-inclusive resorts, and your travel to and from the DR.

As long as you’re prepared, your trip will go smoothly…

The smartest thing to do is book your ride from the airport to your hotel prior to arrival. As with many international airports, there can be a lot of hustle and bustle and if you’re not familiar with the language or the nuances of the airport it can lead to frustration. Thankfully I speak Spanish and had reserved transportation long before my arrival. With the exception of the cabbies, who are just like those at JFK – pushy, everything was fine. The next time I visit I will book a private car because the shuttles stop at every resort along the way, I’d like to avoid it. Nonetheless the ride was easy and comfortable. Upon arrival to the hotel, the check in process could have been a bit easier but after an overnight flight I was tired, jet-lagged, and ready to hit the pool.

For the journey I kept it easy packing mostly bathing suits, cover ups, and a few rompers because let’s face it this was trip about beach ready looks. There was no getting dressed. Like always I packed in a specific color scheme to ensure that if something didn’t work out on the road like it did at home, it all still went together. This trip was mostly greens, corals, some neon and glammed up blacks.

Normally when traveling I opt for hotels where I can earn points, I’m a Marriott girl – hey Bonvoy! However this trip the lovely brides hosted us at the Breathless Resorts. I do enjoy not having to worry about cash once inside, but I did miss the fun of experiencing local cuisine and other attractions. I find that with all-inclusive resorts the food isn’t always the best because it is largely buffet and tends to be out all day. That said, I had a great time and would love to check out some of the other properties – Breathless call me!

Overall we had a wonderful time in DR and I would totally recommend visiting if you haven’t been yet. The Caribbean is such a lush region with every island rich with their own culture that you’ll love. I’m heading to Jamaica in a few weeks and I’ll be sure to share the journey with you all here too.

Now that summer is officially over, where are you traveling to the rest of the year?

Be well,
