I’ve been “bossy” since I was 5. Told so oft I’ve been “bossy” since I was 5. Told so often that I was aggressive or too much and over time it chipped away at me. Left me a bit tattered. Worn down in places where I was once strong, whole, and confident. It’s an odd feeling to know you make adults uncomfortable or question themselves when you’re merely a child. Grown people who make children feel small in their confidence are only building more broken people.
⠀
Girls, especially Black girls, are told they are bossy so often from such a young age, that they begin to question their natural intuition. Afraid to speak up for fear that their forthright disposition will mark them as trouble. I felt like trouble. I felt like my naturally authoritative way wasn’t something to lean into. It wasn’t praised like the boys, who in their own bossiness were told, “he’s a natural born leader.”
⠀
Why couldn’t I lead?
Why wasn’t my fearlessness and direction seen as a predilection toward head honcho instead of top bitch?
⠀
With three daughters under my care I choose my words wisely. I encourage them to share their thoughts, to follow their guts, and to lead the way. It isn’t bossy to know what you want or direct people toward it; it’s confidence. My job is to hone that confidence and turn it into empathetic leadership. To be able to guide people toward their best selves, what an honor.
⠀
To all the bossy girls - 𝗢𝗪𝗡 𝗜𝗧. Be the boss. Make decisions, ask questions, push for the answers. Don’t hesitate to shake the table when something doesn’t sound right or utter no when a yes certainly won’t do.
⠀
Let’s raise a future generation of women who know exactly what they want, how they want it, and how to go get it. Because THAT’S some boss shit. 💅🏾💅🏾💅🏾

When I was a kid @redlobster felt like the best tr When I was a kid @redlobster felt like the best treat in the world. My family didn’t eat out much but when we did; this was my favorite place to go. And yes while I love those BAE biscuits as much as the next person, it was the shrimp scampi that had a hold on my heart.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
simple in ingredients and technique, shrimp scampi is something I make when I’m craving a little decadence and richness. That buttah gives me joy, what can I say? 🤷🏽‍♀️ Serve with pasta or rice because either way it’s gonna be lit like Bic.

my favorite thing is when I can stretch one protei my favorite thing is when I can stretch one protein into two or three meals because then it doesn’t feel like leftovers. These short ribs done barbacoa style have been a taco, taquitos (shown here), and today became a bowl with rice topped with a fried egg, pickled red onions, scallions, and avocado.
*peep stories for a look 👀*

People ask me often, “what can I make from week to week without getting bored?”
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
My suggestion? Make a big batch of something that can be transformed a myriad of ways.
