All I’ve ever wanted was a white Christmas. To wake up one more December morning and see the ground blanketed in snow. While others dream of luxuriating in sunny California, nothing would make me more happy than running outside after the kids tear open presents to build snowmen and throw balls of ice. Yet, here I am another year, another 65 degree holiday on the horizon. But I figured rather than sulk, I will get myself in the spirit. It may not be Christmas in Harlem, but it is my Christmas in California.

As a kid we would go to the Christmas tree lot and honestly it was a struggle, the trees were at times too expensive for us to get. The exorbitant prices too much for my mother’s single parent income, but that never kept us from going. It never kept us from going to smell the pine, to feel the holiday warmth in the air, or from having fun. It’s why now the tree lots hold a host of memories for me. Now in my own household I don’t have a real tree, due to tiny hands and people. But I still find them beautiful.

When I think of Christmas I picture a huge house in some New England town with the fireplace roaring.

Which is absolutely hilarious because none of my holidays looked like that growing up. Full of family certainly and definitely food but also running outside to ride the bikes or roller blades I had just opened. When I think of what I want Christmas to be for my girls I know I want them to feel loved. I want them to know it’s not all about the gifts but it’s also okay to enjoy them. It’s about wearing your red, throwing in some plaid, and most of all just feeling the joy of the season.

To me this is the perfect Christmas day look. Something festive yet comfortable for an afternoon spent playing with new toys, eating, and snacking on cookies. I like to save my fancy for New Year’s or other adult functions. Plus it’s a mash up up some of my favorite go to prints – plaid, leopard, and stripes. And what I love about all three is that they pair perfectly together, remember this post?
