Rediscovering Your Style in Your 30s

I read a book a few years ago when I was struggling to  develop a sense of style. It asked loads of questions, gave examples of people to look at, and ultimately gave you a look to live by. After taking all the quizzes and following the questions I discovered that your girl was a total glamorous bohemian chic goddess. Which makes complete sense because while I live for luxury designer pieces I also stan for Free People dress. Lately I’ve found that I’m getting back to those days when I first discovered the Black girl boho in me.

Style is not something that comes to everyone naturally and I will be the first to tell you while I always had a interest in fashion and a lean toward the extravagant, I wasn’t always the put together chick that I can proclaim to be now. Once upon a time I lived for Nike basketball shorts and a pair of worn in Rainbow flip flops. This is also probably why the boys I pined after in middle and high school weren’t exactly clamoring to like me back? OMG, a revelation in real time. Needless to say that book helped me hone in on what I did like and gave me a spring board to getting my shit on track.

Where to start you ask? Take a look in your closet, do some inventory on what you have, it will help you learn what things you lean toward in the store. Take note of the types of cuts you choose when it comes to pants, tops, and dresses. You’ll begin to notice a pattern. Whether it’s because you’ve grown to feel comfortable in certain things or if it’s simply because you’ve been wearing something so long that you don’t know any better, your closet is the snapshot of what your style is. But it doesn’t have to be where you stay.

For me, style, like anything else had to be practiced to be perfected.

And now as I age and get closer to my mid-thirties I realize that I want my style to grow with me. I know it doesn’t have to mean giving up the things I do enjoy like sneakers, but rather finding ways to translate those looks to fit who I am now.

This is right on time for me! I was just in norstrom with my mom last weekend and said, “I think I need a personal stylist!”

    • I’m so glad! It wouldn’t be a bad thing to do, even if you just got a personal shopper at Nordy’s. They can at least lead you in the right direction. Check out the book and do a closet inventory and see where you end up. Let me know how else I can help!
